Fix Your Eyes: Decisions in a Moment

I watched her step up to the plate clutching the bat and adjusting her helmet. My adrenaline was rushing as I anticipated the moment. She settled in then fixed her eyes.

This was the moment for which I’d been waiting. Everything stops. In those few, brief milliseconds, the batter stands at the ready, her eyes glued to the ball. Suddenly, she swings her bat, makes connection, and the ball has left the field for a home run.

Life is built on moments. What you choose in that moment creates a course of action. In softball, a batter must fix her eyes on the ball. Ask any coach and they will tell you, “Watch the ball all the way to the bat.” Oftentimes, that is why you’ll see a batter pause right after making connection before running to first base. Her eyes are still fixed on the ball. Any runners on base, will do the same, their eyes fixed on the ball because where the ball goes, determines their course of action.

The same could be applied to living a life following Jesus. Everything He did should determine our course of action. In order to stay the course, we must fix our eyes on Him. Hebrews 12:1-2 sums it up perfectly:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Ministry is TOUGH. There is no way around it. When you CHOOSE it, it’s tough, but when you’re BORN into it… that adds a whole new element. It’s a good thing we PKs don’t have to rely on our OWN strength to do this thing we call ministry. Fix your eyes on Jesus. We live in a double standard world in more ways than one. But, as Hebrews so eloquently warns, we don’t have to get entangled. We have the privilege of throwing off all of that. All of the confusion, all of the chaos, all of the worry, all of the anxiety, all of the lies – we must fix our eyes on Jesus. In doing so, we will run with endurance the course He has laid before us. Which, in this time in our lives, is being a pastor’s kid.

Don’t let the moments pass you. You have been called, “For such a time as this…” Fix your eyes on Jesus. Be reminded that you’re not alone because Jesus is not only the AUTHOR of your faith, He is the perfector. You must only stay the course with endurance. Fix your eyes on Jesus.
