From Shame to Freedom

I’m Katie Tyson and I’ve been a pastor’s kid for almost two years now. I felt that my testimony was always kind of basic- I grew up in church, I was saved when I was 6, and I never really thought I would be able to share the gospel very well since I’d never been through anything I considered very serious. When I went into high school, however, I realized I had been struggling with an unhealthy cycle of binge eating, starving myself, and over-exercising since middle school. I had been living with this issue secretly for a really long time. I didn’t feel like I could tell anyone about it because I was embarrassed and didn’t want people to think there was anything wrong with my faith. Finally, near the end of my junior year in 2020, I surrendered my disorder over to the Lord and told my parents. We decided together that it would be a good idea for me to seek help and go to counseling. I was nervous to go because as a pastor’s kid, I didn’t want people to think I was broken or messed up. I think that there is a stigma in the church when it comes to counseling because some people think that it’s an embarrassing and awkward thing to talk about. Once I decided to seek professional help and was able to work through some of my issues with a licensed therapist, I felt like a weight had been lifted.

I am so thankful for how God has transformed and healed me, as well as used my struggle to talk with other girls struggling with similar issues. I know that getting counseling can seem like a shameful thing, but getting the help you need is always the best option. At my church, the people I told about my testimony were very supportive and encouraging once I opened up. Although there might be some people who see counseling as a scary thing, I will always recommend seeking a Licensed Christian Counselor to help when you feel hopeless. I also encourage you to continue to trust in God, because He has a purpose and a plan for you, and He values you very highly!
