Keep Your Head Above the Waves

Many times over the last few months, I have felt as though I am stranded in a raging ocean, struggling to find my footing amidst the rough waters. Every time I manage to stand, another wave crashes over me, and I am swept back under by the current. Again and again, the cycle repeats. It’s a never-ending battle, full of frustration and hopelessness. It’s exhausting.

This past year has brought many unforeseen challenges that have affected people in lots of different ways. Many of us are caught up in our own individual struggles, just trying to keep afloat. The waves are relentless, knocking us down and threatening to wash us away.

It is so easy to lose ourselves in our worry, pain, sadness, and fear. The world has plenty of that to offer. But we can’t allow ourselves to focus solely on these things, or else we risk forgetting the one thing that can help us in these times of hardship and chaos. We may not be strong enough to navigate the storms of life, but God certainly is.

Even the greatest storms obey His every command. The wind and the waves—the trials we face—answer to Him. Is that not a comforting thought? At the end of the day, God is the one in control. What He says, is. It’s as simple as that.

The Bible promises us that we will have troubles in this world, which—let’s be honest—is not quite the reassurance most of us want to hear. But the Bible also tells us to take heart, for God has overcome the world. He has conquered every frustration, every worry, every single thing that causes us distress. Each battle has already been won. His love, strength, and peace overcome it all.

When we find ourselves overwhelmed by our problems, we should take refuge in him. He brings comfort and rest to all who ask. Be still and know that He is God. He is more than enough. It’s important to remember that this world is not our home. We have a greater reward waiting for us at the end of this life. The struggles we face now will fade away until they are nothing but a distant memory. Until then, we hold onto His promises, to the hope we have in Christ. We stay the course, no matter how uncertain it may be.

The waters may be rough, but we will not be swept away. We have been given a firm foundation to stand on, one that will never fail. When the storms come, fix your eyes on Him. He will keep your head above the waves.

John 16:33 NIV – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
